ROSKILDE MUSEUM
EXPERIENCE THE STORY OF ONE OF DENMARKS OLDEST AND MOST IMPORTANT CITIES – FROM PREHISTORIC TIMES TO THE MODERN ERA
Roskilde Museum is your portal to the long history of Roskilde, providing you with an understanding of the city you are visiting. The history spans from the pre-historic period up until today. All exhibitions are in Danish and English.
Roskilde Museum has been the city museum since 1929 and tells the story of one of the oldest and most significant cities in Denmark, and the surrounding area. The museum is in the heart of Roskilde, in two remarkable, protected, historical buildings; Sukkerhuset, The Sugar House, built in 1761 for sugar production, which, for a brief period took place here until 1779. From 1925 to 1984, before Sukkerhuset became a part of Roskilde Museum, it was the city’s fire station. The other building, Liebes Gård, Liebe’s Grocery, was built by merchant Jacob Borch around 1800, and is named after the Liebe family, who lived here until 1900. In 1913 Roskilde became a garrison town, and a soldier home opened in Liebes Gård.
